A dental filling or dental restoration is a dental restorative material used to artificially restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the aesthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material. Dental restoration also refers to the replacement of missing tooth structure by restoring dental implants.

Many people hate going to the dentist! Unfortunately, most of us at some time or another will have a cavity that needs to be filled. Dental fillings are the most common type of dental procedure that is used to help to reduce the bacteria in the mouth, extend the life of the tooth, and hopefully avoid the need for more serious dental work.

During this interactive dental filling procedure, you will remove the decay around the cavity with the dental drill and choose the type of filling (amalgam or composite) that our patient will receive. During recovery, your patient will likely experience some sensitivity, but with the proper care, this will go away, and subsequent decay and pain can be avoided. Put on your gloves and grab your drill!

Amalgam fillings have there pluses and minuses.  As the video states, they are not as aesthetically pleasing as composite fillings and more of the tooth structure has to be removed to fill a tooth with amalgam as opposed to a composite filling.  But they are cheaper and last longer than composite fillings.  Amalgam fillings are safe.  The mercury in the fillings is chemically altered when combined with the other metals in the filling so essentially the mercury in the filling is made inert.  Do a little research and you will find this out.  The current ADA and FDA position is that amalgam is a safe restorative material.  Any dentist that recommends removal of amalgam fillings due to health concerns over mercury exposure just may wrong. Always best to get a second dental opinion if you want to be sure.
